The meeting to reach an agreement for maintaining TikTok’s operations was successful, according to what US President Donald Trump announced today. It should be noted that the American president stated regarding his multi-year effort, which began during his first term, that “it will be completed soon,” while revealing that he is set to speak with President Xi on Friday. Specifically, he wrote in a social media post: “The big trade meeting in Europe between the United States of America and China went VERY WELL! It will be concluding shortly. A deal was also reached on a ‘certain’ company that young people in our country very much wanted to save. They will be very happy! I will speak with President Xi on Friday.”

US: “We have a framework for a TikTok deal”
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that during the US-China trade talks held in Madrid, a framework agreement was reached regarding TikTok, which is set to pave the way for the platform’s transition to American ownership. “We have a framework for a TikTok deal. The two leaders, President Trump and Chinese President Xi, will speak on Friday to finalize the agreement, but we have a framework for a TikTok deal,” Bessent characteristically stated.
US: Trump’s multi-year effort for TikTok
It should be noted that the American president has extended the deadline multiple times for reaching an agreement with China for the sale of at least part of TikTok’s American business to a US-backed owner. A bill passed by Congress and signed by former President Joe Biden banned TikTok in the United States, unless its China-based owner divested its share in the social media company’s US assets. TikTok temporarily ceased operations in the United States on January 18, the day before the Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act took effect. However, on January 19, one day before assuming his second term, Trump stated he would sign an executive order ensuring American companies would not be penalized for hosting TikTok in app stores or on their servers. The executive order, signed on January 20, delayed the law’s implementation for 75 days. Trump extended the deadline again in June. The deadline was recently extended until September 17, but Trump was expected to extend it again if no agreement emerged in time.
