Seven Hezbollah training bases were hit today in Lebanon by a new airstrike from Israel. The seven strikes occurred in the northeastern part of the country, near the Syrian border, where Israel announced it targeted Hezbollah positions, according to Lebanon’s official news agency ANI. According to the same source, the highlands of the Hermel region were the target of the Israeli airstrikes.
Specifically, the Israeli air force targeted “Hezbollah positions, including positions of the Radwan force”, an elite unit of the movement, according to Avichay Adraee, Arabic-speaking spokesperson for the Israeli army. It should be noted that these are the first Israeli strikes following Lebanon’s announcement on Friday (05/09) that the army is set to implement a plan to disarm the pro-Iranian Hezbollah, which was significantly weakened by the war with Israel.
Lebanon: Government welcomes Hezbollah disarmament plan
It should be recalled that Lebanon’s cabinet welcomed on Friday the army’s plan to disarm Hezbollah and stated that the army would begin its implementation, without setting an implementation timeline and warning that the army has limited capabilities. The national division regarding Hezbollah’s disarmament has been at the center of Lebanon following the devastating war with Israel last year, which overturned the balance of power long dominated by the Iran-backed Shiite Muslim group.
Government spokesperson Paul Morcos said the plan would be implemented, but warned that the army has limited capabilities, both in equipment and personnel. For this reason, it may require “additional time and effort”.
