Following the largest Russian aerial attack since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, American President Donald Trump appears to be changing his stance toward Moscow, declaring from the White House that he is ready to proceed to the second phase of sanctions against Russia, after weeks of hesitation despite his apparent disappointment with Vladimir Putin.
Specifically, US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday from the White House that he is ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. “Are you ready to proceed to the second phase of sanctions against Russia, punishing Putin?” a reporter asked him. “Yes, I am” Trump replied.

It should be noted that although the American president has expressed his displeasure toward Moscow following his meeting with Putin last month, he had not proceeded until today with imposing stricter sanctions against Russia.
Earlier, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had mentioned in an interview that the United States and Europe are considering a new round of sanctions and secondary tariffs on Russia, hoping that an economic “collapse” would lead Vladimir Putin to peace talks with Ukraine.
“We are ready to increase pressure on Russia, but we need our European partners to follow us,” he said.
The American secretary believes that “we are now in a race between how long the Ukrainian army can hold out and how long the Russian economy can endure.”
“And if the US and [the European Union] can intervene, impose more sanctions, secondary tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, the Russian economy will collapse completely and this will force President Putin to sit at the negotiating table,” Bessent added.
