“Postal providers in 25 member countries have already announced the suspension of their postal services to the United States, citing uncertainties particularly related to transit services,” the Universal Postal Union, a United Nations agency, stated in an announcement. The specialized agency specifically announced that 25 of its member states have proceeded to suspend shipments to the US due to uncertainties from the impact of customs tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.
Suspension of postal services to US due to Trump tariffs: When the measure will be implemented
The Universal Postal Union, an agency that promotes cooperation between postal services of its 192 member countries, emphasized that it conveyed its concerns regarding these suspensions in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, dated August 25, 2025.
It did not name the countries, although Australia, Norway, and Switzerland, among others, have already publicly announced they are proceeding with these suspensions.
Last month, the Trump administration announced it was eliminating the global “de minimis” exemption, which allowed duty-free entry of products worth up to $800 into the US and involved minimal paperwork.
This measure is expected to take effect on August 29.
