“We need a just peace, a peace where our future will be decided only by us,” said the Ukrainian president, adding that “Ukraine will resist Russia as long as its calls for peace go unheard. Ukraine hasn’t won yet, but certainly hasn’t lost.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a message of support to his compatriots, honoring the country’s Independence Day while wearing a vyshyvanka, the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt. Independence Day celebrations took place in Kyiv as the country commemorates its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Zelensky, alongside his wife and Canadian Prime Minister, laid a wreath for the anniversary. “We are building a Ukraine strong and powerful enough to live safely and peacefully. So that here, in this square, in Independence Square, under our flags, on our land, our children and grandchildren can celebrate our Independence Day. In peace. In tranquility. With confidence in the future. With respect. And with gratitude to all those who defended Ukraine in this war for independence. To those who endured, who prevailed, who won the victory. Such a goal is worth living for. And that is what we support. Happy holidays to you, wonderful people of a wonderful country! Happy Independence Day! Glory to Ukraine!” he said in a Facebook message.

Zelensky: accusations against Russia for daily airstrikes
In his message, the Ukrainian president accused Russia of daily airstrikes on civilian facilities, while emphasizing that Ukraine responds with attacks on fuel depots and military airfields on Russian territory.
Zelensky’s statements came after Moscow announced that Ukraine launched drone attacks that caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the western Kursk region during the night.
The fire at the nuclear facility was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, according to the plant’s press service on Telegram. While the attack damaged a transformer, radiation levels remained within normal limits.
International Atomic Energy Agency assessments of nuclear facilities after the explosions
The United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was aware of reports about the fire, while the organization’s director general added that “every nuclear facility must be protected at all times.”
The IAEA has repeatedly called on both Russia and Ukraine to exercise “maximum restraint” around nuclear facilities during the war.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also participated in the celebrations and stood beside Zelensky at St. Sophia’s Cathedral, telling the crowd: “I want to say something very simple and important: Canada will always stand with Ukraine.”
According to Ukrainian media, Carney announced that drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles worth over 1 billion Canadian dollars (617 million euros) will be delivered to Ukraine in September.
Also present was US envoy Keith Kellogg, who, according to Ukrainian media, was honored with the Order of Merit by Zelensky during the ceremony. After Zelensky thanked Kellogg and US President Donald Trump for their support, Kellogg told Zelensky: “We will make it work.”
Trump sent a letter to Ukraine praising its courage and stating that the United States believes in its future as an independent state.
The letter was shared on X by Zelensky, who expressed his own message: we will not lose.
