A man convicted of murder was executed publicly by hanging from a crane in Iran, in front of a gathered crowd. In graphic photos, Sajad Molayi Hakani can be seen on August 19 standing on a platform, blindfolded with a noose around his neck. The noose is connected to a crane controlled by another man who appears to be a member of the execution team.
It’s worth noting that this marks the second public execution within three days. The Iranian man was executed at the crime scene, having been convicted for the murder of a couple and a young woman with a hunting rifle in late 2024.
The man was hanged in public view from a crane in Kordkuy, “at the crime scene and publicly,” stated Heidar Asiabi, head of justice for the province, on the Judicial Body’s Mizan website.
Iran: This execution comes just two days after the public hanging of another man
This execution comes just two days after the public hanging of a man in the southern Fars province, who was convicted for murdering a mother and her three children during a robbery. His wife was also sentenced to death. Her execution will take place at a later date.
According to reports, Iran has executed 612 people during the first half of the current year. The Middle Eastern country executes more people than any other nation, second only to China, reports Amnesty International.
The United Nations has highlighted a concerning increase in death sentences in Iran. Nevertheless, public executions remain rare and are typically reserved for the most serious crimes that provoke intense public outrage. The majority of executions are carried out inside prisons.
