Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated today, Thursday (21/8) that European leaders are attempting to hinder the progress that, as he claimed, was made during the Russian-American summit last week in Alaska, regarding a potential peace agreement for Ukraine. Kyiv’s European allies are trying to shift the focus of efforts away from resolving what Russia considers to be the “root causes” of the war, he argued.
Sergey Lavrov: Reiterated Russian concerns about how discussions on Ukraine security guarantees are being conducted
Meanwhile, Lavrov reiterated Russian concerns about how discussions on Ukraine security guarantees are being conducted without Moscow’s involvement. Any ideas that depart from those formulated by Russia in its talks with Ukraine in 2022 in Constantinople have no hope, the Russian Foreign Minister emphasized.
Lavrov also stated that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly declared his readiness to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, but there are several issues that need to be resolved before such a meeting can take place.
It should be noted that Putin had questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy due to the postponement of elections in Ukraine because of the war. Furthermore, Lavrov stated that the legitimacy issue must be resolved before Moscow signs any document with Kyiv.
