According to information from the Dhekelia British Base Police, the incident occurred around 4 AM on August 21st. The 32-year-old, a resident of Nicosia province, was driving on the Larnaca-Famagusta road when at some point he entered a dirt road. As he later testified, he stopped for a few minutes and got out of his vehicle, without realizing he had dangerously approached the “dead zone”.
As reported by sigmalive.com, a short time later he noticed lights heading toward him and realized he had already unknowingly entered the territory of the occupied areas. When he understood that the lights came from a Turkish checkpoint, he panicked and ran in the opposite direction, ending up on British Base territory, leaving his car behind. He claimed in his testimony that the vehicle was surrounded by Turkish soldiers. The case is being investigated by the British Base Police, while the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus have also been informed. Through the United Nations, the necessary actions are expected to be taken to return the car to its owner.
