This firefighter is the second fatality from this year’s wildfires raging in Portugal, following another death on Friday in Guarda, in the eastern part of the country, of a former mayor who was participating in firefighting efforts.
This morning approximately 2,000 firefighters were mobilized to combat the multiple blazes raging in northern and central Portugal. A thousand firefighters alone are involved in battling the fire in Arganil. Furthermore, the Portuguese government, like Spain’s, has activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
