34-year-old homeless man arrested – Authorities call attack “targeted”
A 34-year-old homeless man was arrested the same night for the double murder that local authorities are calling a “targeted attack.” The suspect was arrested four hours later, at 1:40 AM on Tuesday, at Westall station, approximately 6 kilometers from the crime scene. He had two large dogs with him and, according to authorities, knew the victims. He has been charged with homicide and is expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Victim was five months pregnant
Athina Georgopoulos, who was in her fifth month of pregnancy, was eagerly anticipating becoming a mother. “She was so happy because she didn’t think she could have children,” her aunt, Patty Dilveridi, told the Herald Sun, adding that she had spoken with her two days prior and heard her happy. Georgopoulos cared for her mother while working in customer service departments for electricity and insurance companies.
Authorities continue investigations to determine the motive and the perpetrator’s relationship with the victims. It has been confirmed that a weapon was used, though not a firearm. The area remains cordoned off, while forensic examinations are scheduled for Wednesday.
The threatening messages
Meanwhile, investigators are examining whether threatening graffiti outside the house, with phrases like “U R Gay,” “Enough is Enough,” “Betrayal” and “Karma,” written in yellow-green and black paint on fences and walls, are connected to the crime.
