The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, held a phone conversation with the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, as announced by the Turkish presidency on Tuesday afternoon. The communication was initiated by the Ukrainian president, just days before scheduled talks between US and Russian leaders in Alaska (August 15), focusing on the war in Ukraine.
According to the announcement, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues. Erdogan reminded that Russian and Ukrainian negotiators have conducted three rounds of talks in Istanbul, noting progress on certain issues, and expressed hope that upcoming negotiations would lead to a permanent peace agreement. At the same time, he reiterated Ankara’s intention and readiness to host a summit at the leadership level to end the war, emphasizing that creating specialized working groups for the military, political and humanitarian aspects of the process could accelerate reaching an agreement.
