A sudden shock convulsed Turkey when a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Balıkesir region. Absolute chaos and terror were painted on the faces of residents, while moments of panic and uncertainty were captured by cameras and mobile phones.
The moment of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in the Sındırgı area of Balıkesir was captured on camera, as it caused products to fall from shelves in supermarkets in İnegöl, Bursa, and panic among residents who rushed to evacuate their homes.

Terror from new earthquake in Turkey
The powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey mobilized everyone as it was also felt on Aegean islands, in Istanbul and in Marmara.
Building collapses
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority reported that the earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 4.6, and urged citizens not to enter buildings that have been damaged.
Local media reports that at least one building collapsed in the city of Sındırgı, near the earthquake’s epicenter.
Turkey sits on major tectonic fault lines and earthquakes are a frequent occurrence.
In 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings across 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of neighboring Syria.

Erdogan’s announcement
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan posted that:
“I express my heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery to all our citizens affected by the earthquake that struck Balıkesir and was felt in neighboring provinces.
From the first moment, all relevant services were mobilized and are taking necessary measures. We are closely monitoring the efforts.
May God protect our country from all kinds of disasters.”

Major mobilization of authorities
Local civil protection and rescue services were placed on alert. Assessment of the situation in buildings and infrastructure continues, particularly in areas near the epicenter.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that “all our AFAD and relevant agency teams immediately began field investigations regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces. There are no negative impacts at this time. We continuously monitor the situation. I express my wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our people from disasters.”
What seismologist Naci Gorur claims
Seismologist Dr. Naci Gorur made a post about the powerful earthquake.
As he said:
“A 6.1 magnitude earthquake just occurred in the Alakır-Sındırgı/Balıkesir area. The earthquake occurred in the Simav fault zone, in the Sındırgı segment. This is a right-lateral strike-slip fault. It’s not a small earthquake and damage may occur. I don’t believe a larger earthquake will follow. Stay away from buildings for a while.”
In a newer post he added: “News of destruction is coming from Sındırgı and its surroundings. It won’t be as harmless as we thought. Let’s hope there won’t be many casualties” and added that “aftershocks continue.”
