Moscow toned down its stance in its first official response regarding Donald Trump’s statement ordering the deployment of American nuclear submarines to “appropriate areas” near Russia. “Everyone should be careful with nuclear rhetoric,” the Kremlin clarified today (4/8).
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that it was clear American submarines were already on combat missions and added that Moscow had no desire to engage in a war of words with Trump on the matter. “We are not talking about any kind of nuclear escalation,” Peskov stated characteristically.
Trump announced on Friday that he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to “appropriate areas” following comments by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about the danger of war between the two countries.
Potential Putin – Witkoff meeting
According to the Kremlin, Putin may meet with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff this week. The latter will visit Russia on Wednesday, according to reports by the state news agency TASS.
It should be noted that Trump has set a Friday deadline for Russia to agree to end the war in Ukraine, otherwise, as the American president said, it “will face new sanctions.”
