Workers at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in eastern Japan, where one of the most serious nuclear accidents of the modern era occurred in 2011 caused by an earthquake and tsunami, were evacuated urgently today. This action was taken following the issuance of an emergency tsunami warning due to a very powerful earthquake that struck the Pacific Ocean off the Russian coast, as announced by operator TEPCO.
“We urgently evacuated all our workers and employees,” a TEPCO spokesperson confirmed to the French Press Agency, adding however that “no abnormalities were observed” at the facility.
Cleanup and decommissioning work is ongoing at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear station, which is expected to continue for decades more following the destruction caused by the historic earthquake and tsunami that struck it in March 2011.
