Polish Air Force fighter jets have intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, according to an official statement from the Polish government. This marks the third such incident within just a few days, with Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announcing via a post on platform X that a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft had been detected in the area.
According to the minister, the Russian aircraft was approximately 56 kilometers northeast of Koszalin when it was intercepted by two Polish fighter jets. Poland’s Ministry of Defense clarified that no violation of Polish airspace occurred, and that the fighters operated within standard surveillance and area protection procedures.
Russian reconnaissance flights along Poland’s coastline on the rise
Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote that Russia has once again carried out provocative actions near the borders of NATO member states, testing the vigilance and operational readiness of the alliance’s defense systems. Similar incidents involving Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic had already been recorded the previous Monday and Friday.
According to Warsaw, Russian reconnaissance flights along the coastline of NATO member Poland have recently surged once again. In mid-July, Polish fighter jets intercepted Russian military aircraft on three consecutive days. During one interception, pilots made visual contact with the crew of the Russian aircraft and signaled them to withdraw.
Poland and the Baltic states fear that Russia, facing mounting difficulties in its war in Ukraine, may escalate provocations against NATO member states — for example, through increased reconnaissance flight activity.
