A 70-year-old woman from central Israel was arrested today (23/07), charged with assassination attempt against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu through the construction and use of an improvised explosive device. Specifically, Israeli police described the woman as a “known anti-government protester” and revealed that she had contacted other protesters seeking ways to obtain weapons, while reportedly asking questions about the Prime Minister’s security arrangements.
According to The Jerusalem Post, her personal details and residence location were initially placed under judicial protection through a publication ban order. However, following a request from investigative authorities, part of the order was lifted, allowing disclosure of the charges against her.
Her arrest was carried out by Shin Bet (Israel’s Internal Security Service), while the investigation was assigned to the Serious and International Crimes Unit of the national Lahav 433 service, based in Lod. After completing the procedure on Wednesday afternoon, authorities handed over the case materials to the Prosecutor’s Office and Justice system for criminal prosecution.
State broadcaster KAN reported that the arrested woman had been detained two weeks ago but was subsequently released under restrictive conditions, including a ban on accessing government buildings and a requirement to stay away from the Prime Minister.
