The European Union officially welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Syria and Israel, mediated by the United States and regional partners. In its statement, the European External Action Service (EEAS) emphasizes that the ceasefire must be fully respected by all parties.
“We call on all parties to immediately cease all acts of violence, protect all citizens without discrimination, and take immediate measures to prevent incitement and sectarian rhetoric. We also call on Israel and all other foreign actors to fully respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,” the statement continues, adding:
“We are appalled by the hundreds of victims of violence in recent days, particularly the violence reportedly committed by various armed groups against unarmed civilians. We demand that all perpetrators of serious violations of international humanitarian law be held accountable and brought to justice – including through the support of relevant international mechanisms.”
EU: “Now is the time for dialogue”
The EU continues by emphasizing that: “Now is the time for dialogue and for promoting a truly inclusive transition. Syria’s transitional authorities, together with local authorities, bear the responsibility to protect all Syrians without discrimination and take necessary measures for disarmament, demobilization, and restructuring of national security forces in accordance with international standards.
Finally, the EU declares its readiness to assist in these efforts and support a “peaceful and inclusive transition.”
