Tension is mounting in negotiations to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, with Egypt appearing particularly frustrated with Hamas‘ stance, according to an Arab diplomat who spoke to the Times of Israel. According to the diplomat’s statements, the Egyptian delegation currently in Doha, where indirect talks continue, threatened the head of the Hamas mission, Khalil al-Hayya, with expulsion and insulted him due to his persistent refusal to accept the ceasefire proposal.

Furthermore, the same diplomat confirmed previous reports, emphasizing that Cairo “is pressuring Hamas to accept the agreement.” The harsh language used in the meeting is indicative of the displeasure, which according to a second source involved in the mediation process, reflects Egypt’s anger over the Palestinian organization’s “deliberate obstructionism.”
Despite the widespread frustration from the Egyptian side, mediators believe the obstacles can be overcome and that an agreement remains achievable within the coming days.
Meanwhile, Hamas has not yet responded to the new mapping proposals submitted by Israel this week, which provide for partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza during the 60-day ceasefire under negotiation. The new proposal is seen as a “slightly moderated version” of previous plans, and Hamas’ official response is awaited.
