The percentage of Americans who approve of how Republican President Donald Trump is handling his duties has dropped to 41% in recent weeks, falling to the lowest level since his return to the White House in January, as many disapprove of some harsh decisions, according to a poll by the Ipsos institute and Reuters news agency published yesterday, Wednesday.
An equal percentage of the sample that participated in the two-day poll, 41%, reported that they approve of the tycoon’s overall performance since he resumed office, which is also the lowest popularity level of his second term.
Only 28% of the sample responded positively to the question of whether immigrant arrests at workplaces during authority raids are “good for the country,” while 54% disagreed. Republicans in the sample are divided, with 56% in favor, 24% against, and 20% stating they are uncertain. Democrats opposed with an overwhelming majority.
In a recent raid on a California farm, a farm worker lost his life.
Republicans were also divided on the question of whether they consider it good that raids aimed at arresting immigrants are conducted in a manner reminiscent of military operations. 60% were in favor, 25% against. Overall, only one in three Americans is in favor and only one in ten Democrats.
Respondents were divided, but maintaining clearer party lines, on the question of whether federal immigration enforcement (ICE) officers should have their faces covered, with 70% of Republicans answering positively and a similar percentage of Democrats negatively.
Trump: Immigration at the center of his policy, popularity at its nadir
Until now, the harsh immigration policy was a strong element for President Trump. In Ipsos/Reuters polls on various issues, from foreign policy to tax policy, immigration remained an issue for which positive opinions reached 50% until now, at this level they were in February and March. However, the percentage of positive views is falling lately, with 51% of the sample now disapproving of how the tycoon handles the issue — a percentage 10% higher than those who approve.
Congress this month passed a fiscal law that provides funding to arrest and deport at least 100,000 immigrants. Around 58,000 immigrants were being held by authorities around the end of June.
The poll was conducted online, on a national scale with a sample of 1,027 adult citizens. The margin of statistical error is ±3%.
