One person lost their life and 13 others were injured after lightning struck an archery range in New Jersey on Wednesday evening, according to police.
The Jackson Township Police Department was notified just before 7:15 p.m. local time that several people had been struck by lightning at the Black Knight Bowbenders archery range, as reported by the New York Times.
Authorities arrived at the range and found several people receiving medical attention, stated Police Chief Matthew Kunz, according to the NYT. He also said that one person briefly lost consciousness. Police had been notified before their arrival that CPR was being performed on one individual, according to Kunz. It’s unclear if the person who lost consciousness was the same one who received CPR.
Gene Grodzki, a member of the archery club, told the NYT that defibrillators were used on two other club members.
The victims ranged in age from 7 to 61 years old, according to multiple reports carried by the Independent.
A 61-year-old man was killed by the strike, Kunz stated. It’s unclear if the man was the person who required CPR or lost consciousness.
Injuries ranged from burns to complaints of not feeling well, according to authorities.
According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes about 25 million times per year in the United States. Approximately 20 people are killed and hundreds more are seriously injured by lightning annually across the country, the service says.
