In a rare and candid confession about his marriage, Barack Obama revealed that Donald Trump has affected his daily life, creating tensions in his relationship with his wife Michelle Obama. In an interview with The New Yorker, the 64-year-old former US president admitted that his wife would prefer to step away from public life so they could enjoy their remaining years together. “She wants to see her husband relax and spend more time with her, enjoying what’s left of our life,” Obama added.
However, as he explained, political developments don’t allow him to take this step. “This creates real tension in our home and disappoints her,” he said characteristically, explaining that he understands why many feel the need for his more active presence.
Obama: “The fact that people want me to do more is a good sign”
He even responded to those who believe he isn’t doing enough, emphasizing that his political activity after the presidency is unprecedented. “No other former president has been the main spokesperson for his party in four electoral contests after leaving office,” he said. Despite the pressures, he admits: “The fact that people want me to do more is a good sign.”
Obama, who was elected president at age 47 and left the White House at 55, remains one of the most active personalities on the contemporary American political scene. Recently, he participated actively in Democratic initiatives and appeared alongside New York mayor Zohran Mamdani during a visit to a daycare center.
During the visit, Obama didn’t hesitate to joke with preschool children, causing laughter when he asked them to help him stand up, saying: “I’m old now.” At the same time, Obama continues to be a central point of reference for Democrats, who often present him as a symbol of a different political era and hope for his return.
