The United States is considering imposing shock tariffs of up to 500% on countries that maintain trade relations with Russia, in an effort to tighten Moscow’s economic blockade. Meanwhile, Washington is preparing to send new Patriot systems to Ukraine, with Germany taking over the purchase of the defense equipment.
According to American reports, the decision on sanctions is being strongly pushed by Congress, which is preparing a package of measures that includes, among other things, the seizure of Russian assets for Kiev’s benefit.
The new Patriot package is in its final approval phase, with the agreement expected to be completed within the day, as Pete Hegseth will meet with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. While the number of systems to be sent has not been clarified, sources indicate that it involves multiple long-range units.
The question that remains open is whether Donald Trump intends to adopt the harsh sanctions package himself, as he faces increasing pressure from Congressional members to take public initiative against Moscow.
USA: Can cooperate with Europe to gain access to frozen Russian assets
In a bipartisan bill supported by 85 of the 100 US senators, the imposition of extremely high tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries that buy Russian oil, natural gas and uranium is envisioned.
One of the bill’s authors, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, has repeatedly described these tariffs as a “hammer” that could bring Russia to the negotiating table.
Senators have suggested that the US, in cooperation with European allies, may gain access to frozen Russian assets, including $5 billion seized by American authorities, funds that would be channeled to Ukraine.
