Specifically, the administration announced via Telegram that “the enemy used three unmanned aerial vehicles.” The same source added that no “critical” damage was recorded at the nuclear plant. Reuters was unable to independently verify the Russian information. The attack reportedly occurred one day after hundreds of small arms fire were heard at the nuclear plant late Saturday night, according to an announcement by the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Russia: Forces captured Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in early weeks of invasion
Russian forces captured the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in the early weeks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Each side regularly accuses the other of opening fire or taking other actions that could cause a nuclear accident. The plant, which is Europe’s largest nuclear facility, is not operational but still requires power for cooling its nuclear fuel.
The Russian-appointed plant administration stated in its announcement that the facility “continues to operate normally, with all necessary safety precautions in place.”
