The Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon sailed into the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday morning (17/03). The warship reached Gibraltar as it continues its mission toward the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus’s Akrotiri. Specifically, according to information from ukdefencejournal, the ship was spotted this morning near the Strait of Gibraltar as it crossed from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean. The Portsmouth-based warship is heading toward waters off Cyprus, where it is expected to strengthen the United Kingdom’s defensive capabilities in the region.

The vessel departed from the United Kingdom on March 10 following a preparation period. The mission’s purpose is to strengthen protection of British personnel and infrastructure, including the military base at Cyprus’s Akrotiri, which came under drone attacks just days ago.
It should be noted that the deployment of the British ship is directly connected to the strike that hit the British base at Cyprus’s Akrotiri several days ago.
British authorities continue to investigate the drone’s origin, with reports suggesting it was likely an Iranian-made device with Russian technology, possibly launched from Lebanon or Iraq.

The incident served as a wake-up call regarding Cyprus’s military exposure due to the British bases and the broader Middle East escalation.
Other British measures had preceded this, including the deployment of two Wildcat helicopters with anti-drone capabilities, while the United Kingdom has announced additional air and anti-aircraft reinforcements in the region. HMS Dragon’s arrival adds the naval component to this protective umbrella.
