Migrant arrivals from Libya to southern Italy increased by 87% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Italian Ministry of Interior. At the same time, during the same period, 91% of migrants and asylum seekers who landed in Italy began their journey from the coasts of eastern and western Libya. This represents 27,200 people. Last year, they did not exceed 56% of the total.
A drastic reduction, conversely, was recorded regarding Tunisia. It should be noted that last year 37% of those arriving in Italy had departed from Tunisian coasts. This year, the corresponding percentage, always for the first half of the year, is only 6%.
In total, from January 1st, 31,948 migrants and refugees arrived in southern Italy. Last year, for the same period, it was 28,376.
