The significance of today’s presence of the French president and Greek prime minister in Cyprus was emphasized by Cypriot president, Nikos Christodoulides, in his statements following the trilateral meeting with Emmanuel Macron and Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Nikos Christodoulides, expressing his gratitude on behalf of the Cypriot people for their immediate response to his request and for their practical support, emphasized that Cyprus’s security simultaneously constitutes security for Europe.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus characterized as particularly symbolic the fact that the frigate Kimon bears the name of the ancient Athenian general and admiral Kimon, one of Greece’s most important admirals, who is historically connected to Cyprus.
At the same time, he noted that France constitutes a strong strategic partner of Cyprus, while also thanking the peoples of Spain and Italy for their contribution. As he noted, Greece, France, Italy and Spain demonstrate in practice what European solidarity means. Mr. Christodoulides also emphasized that through their decisive help they contribute crucially to Eastern Mediterranean security, while simultaneously sending a clear message about Europe’s capabilities to ensure stability in the region.
Referring to developments in the Middle East, he noted that what is happening in the region has broader impact and directly affects Europe, both in security matters and regarding migration flows. He clarified however that Cyprus is not involved in military operations and that its role is purely humanitarian.
“We know very well what war means,” he stated characteristically, sending the message that Europe stands united to ensure security, stability and peace, underlining that in such moments unity constitutes Europe’s greatest strength.
