American and NATO infrastructure in Cyprus continues to be targeted by attacks from Iran and Hezbollah, but air defense systems are successfully intercepting them. While there is concern in Cyprus, the sense of serious danger has been eliminated, as despite continued targeting, advanced air defense systems have managed to intercept all incidents.
According to reports, enhanced security measures are also in place at Paphos airport and the strategically important “Andreas Papandreou” air base, which is used by the US as part of an expanded Cyprus-United States defense cooperation agreement. According to a report by the Cypriot newspaper “Phileleftheros,” last January, US-Cyprus cooperation was strengthened focusing on the construction and upgrade of defense infrastructure, military training, and exploring defense equipment capabilities. For this reason, Paphos airport also appears to be coming under the security “umbrella.” Moreover, the anti-missile shields deployed in Cyprus these days by Greece, France, and other allies prevented potential strikes in recent days.
Strong reaction from Turkey over Cyprus defense fortification and Patriots in Karpathos
At the same time, the defense fortification of Cyprus and the presence of Greek Patriot systems in Karpathos provoked a strong reaction from Turkey. Ankara warned against any attempt to undermine the demilitarized status of the islands, claiming it would not allow fait accompli, with Athens rejecting these accusations as unilateral and unfounded.
Diplomatic sources tell parapolitika.gr that Turkey’s reactions were expected, attributing them to their usual rhetoric. They particularly attribute Turkey’s concern to the possibility of Greek military presence remaining in Cyprus.
It should be noted that Turkey today records its presence in the Occupied Areas with ships in Famagusta, including a torpedo boat and a missile boat, while destroyers frequently appear in Kyrenia. It also maintains frigates and destroyers off Famagusta. Additionally, a large part of the Turkish fleet remains on standby in the ports of Mersin, Antalya, and Marmaris, while ships maintain a permanent presence near Alexandretta.
As well-informed sources tell parapolitika.gr, potential strikes from missiles and drones are not the only concern for the Cypriot government. This concern extends beyond the current period of military conflicts to the next phase for all of Europe. Beyond conventional military risks, Cyprus also faces the threat of terrorist attacks, which analysts characterize as the greatest danger for the future.
In this context, MI6 chief Blaise Metreweli arrives in Cyprus today for a series of contacts, while the United Kingdom issued a travel advisory recommending British nationals avoid traveling to Cyprus.
The presence of British Defense Minister John Healey in Cyprus yesterday smoothed the climate between the two countries. As well-informed sources maintain, the United Kingdom is set to provide the expected defensive protection of the island until the end of the conflicts. Most importantly, however, most analysts agree that we are still at the beginning of the military confrontations.
