The Greek armed guard who was aboard the ship “Eternity C” in the Red Sea has been found alive and rescued after the vessel sank following a Houthi attack. According to a report by Kathimerini, he was rescued by search teams from Diaplous and Ambrey companies, who have been operating in the area since yesterday morning. It is estimated that he was in the water for approximately 48 hours, while until yesterday there were suspicions that he had been abducted by the rebels.
According to information reported by international media, the Houthis are holding six crew members hostage. The ship “Eternity C” carried 22 crew members, most of them Philippine nationals, and three armed guards – two Indians and the Greek team leader who was found today.
Of the 22 sailors, three were in the engine room at the time of the attack and were trapped there by the explosion. Furthermore, according to the same source, a Russian sailor was injured and remained on the ship until it sank, as his condition made it impossible for him to jump into the sea.
The number of missing persons now reaches ten, compared to the initial fifteen, as five others were located and rescued in the early hours. It should be noted that yesterday the European Union’s naval mission in the Red Sea announced that they rescued six other crew members from the sea.
For their part, a military spokesman for the Houthis stated that:
“The Yemeni Navy responded to rescue some crew members of the ship, provide them with medical care and transport them to a safe location.”
The attack occurred as the ship was sailing approximately 50 nautical miles off the port of Hodeidah, Yemen. The attack was launched by floating drones and armed Houthis aboard speedboats off the coast of Yemen.
