As Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced in his speech at the Munich Conference, Britain will deploy a carrier strike group in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. “This is clear proof of our commitment to Euro-Atlantic security,” the British Prime Minister emphasized. “That’s why we are intensifying our cooperation with France in the nuclear sector. For decades, the United Kingdom has been the only nuclear power in Europe that has used its deterrent capability to protect all NATO allies,” he added.
At the same time, he conveyed that “there can be no British security without Europe,” which, as he underlined, simultaneously means that “there is no European security without Britain.”
Starmer: We must be prepared for conflict
At the same time, he pointed out that “Europe must have the ability to deter any aggressive action.”
“We need to be ready even for war” and do whatever is required “to defend our citizens, our values and our way of life.”
“Europe must gain greater autonomy and rely on its own forces,” he added.
“This requires more courage, overcoming petty political considerations and short-term calculations. To move united for a stronger Europe and a more European Alliance.”
At the same time, he declared himself “proud that my party contributed decisively to the creation of NATO, which our then Foreign Secretary, Ernest Bevin, called the spiritual bond of the West.”
“We have proven our commitment to this principle in practice, defending each other’s sovereignty, as happened in Greenland, and, above all, by activating Article 5: we fought together in Afghanistan, paying a heavy price.”
“Our commitment to Article 5 remains unwavering and rest assured that, if necessary, the United Kingdom will stand by your side.”
