Amid a period of tensions between Tehran and Washington, with global public opinion watching developments with bated breath, the Fars news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has requested the start of talks with the US regarding Iran’s nuclear program. “Iran and the US will have talks on the nuclear issue,” the agency added without clarifying when this would happen.
Meanwhile, the Tasnim agency reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to meet with Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy. The US has not yet confirmed this meeting, which would take place after weeks of tension between Washington and Tehran and after Trump threatened to respond with military force to the bloody crackdown on demonstrations in Iran.
Since then, the US has strengthened its military presence around Iran, although last week the American president told reporters that Tehran is having “serious talks” with Washington.
Iranian nuclear program: The prospects for agreement with the US
According to the Axios website citing two sources familiar with the matter, the possibility of an agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program is expected to be discussed in their Friday meeting between US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
This meeting will take place in Istanbul.
The Iranian Tasnim agency had reported in the morning that the meeting was scheduled for today, but this was not confirmed by Washington.
