Sixteen people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Turkey today (01/02), as authorities reported, while another 30 were injured. Specifically, traffic accidents occurred in the Antalya and Burdur regions. Regarding the traffic accident in Antalya, “the bus driver unfortunately did not survive despite all efforts made. The death toll therefore rises to nine fatalities,” announced Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin. The previous toll was eight dead, while 25 people were injured. The bus, which was carrying 34 passengers from Raidestos (Tekirdag) to Antalya, overturned this morning at 10:20 (09:20 Greek time) on a highway that became slippery due to rain, the governor clarified.

“There was also fog. This is a junction where you shouldn’t go fast, but it seems the bus entered at high speed,” he added. Of the 25 injured, seven are in serious condition, he added, without clarifying whether foreign citizens are among the victims. Ahmet Kondaz told CNNTurk: “The road had fog, the driver was going too fast. When he approached the turn, which I know is sharp, I held on, but the driver couldn’t make it. The bus fell on its side, slid and hit the safety barriers. People started falling, I tried to hold them, but I couldn’t.”
Fatma Inse, who lives in the area and has a business, stated: “This road is a death machine. Accidents happen constantly. An urgent solution must be found. I am also a driver and feel very anxious when passing through this turn. How mothers suffer. We ask for support from the authorities. A study should be done for this road.” Seven people were killed and five injured in another accident that occurred in Burdur, on the Antalya-Isparta highway in southern Turkey, reported the private news agency DHA.
