Scott Ruskan has saved the lives of 165 people so far during search and rescue operations in Texas, which was hit by severe floods on Friday. It should be noted that the death toll has exceeded 80 and according to estimates is expected to rise further as there are dozens of missing persons.
Ruskan is a rescue swimmer with the U.S. Coast Guard and has been recognized as a hero, according to a Department of Homeland Security official. “He is an American hero whose selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the U.S. Coast Guard,” the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced.
“American hero”
Ruskan was among the Coast Guard members who operated in Texas after Donald Trump declared Kerr County in a state of emergency and activated the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Texas. “It was the first rescue mission of his career,” revealed U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who characterized Ruskan as an “American hero.”
“His selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the U.S. Coast Guard,” she added. So far, the U.S. Coast Guard has assisted in more than 230 rescues, according to the Homeland Security official.
