Romanian police suggest the theory of a minor collision with the truck the fatal minibus carrying PAOK fans had just overtaken for the deadly crash. Seconds before the fatal collision, the van driver had attempted to overtake, with possibilities pointing to scenarios of either complete driver negligence or a medical issue (such as a heart attack).

According to Timișoara authorities, it appears that the minibus driver, in his attempt to return to his lane after overtaking, touched the front left part of the tanker truck with his rear right section, which sent him back into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with the truck.

However, while the video shows the fatal minibus moving to re-enter its lane, it doesn’t appear to have been hit from behind. Something that, among other things, would have completely destabilized its path, while here it smoothly veers left again.

Romania crash: Scenarios for the van driver

At the same time, the driver appears not to have braked at all until the moment of collision, as the brake lights don’t illuminate for even a second. This shows that the driver not only made no attempt to correct the vehicle’s path, but didn’t even try to brake, crashing at full speed into the truck.

The possibility of a tire blowout is also likely removed from the framework of tragedy causes, as the driver would have either tried to restore the car to its path or would have braked, which he doesn’t appear to have done.

In fact, looking more carefully at the video, we see that after overtaking, the driver puts on his right turn signal to re-enter his lane, but immediately after puts on his left signal and goes back into oncoming traffic, as if continuing the overtaking maneuver without seeing the approaching truck at all.

And this is because the video shows him starting the process to return to his lane and suddenly, without apparent reason, returns the vehicle to oncoming traffic and crashes without braking into the truck.

Regarding images that have circulated showing a wheel wedged under the truck that the fatal minibus had overtaken before the head-on collision, this is likely a wheel from the van that was ejected after the violent crash and ended up under the truck.
