A severe blizzard is hitting large parts of the central and eastern states in America, resulting in approximately 185 million people being in a state of emergency. The unprecedented cold has so far caused the death of seven people. At least two people died from hypothermia in Louisiana, while other deaths connected to the severe weather have been reported in Texas, Tennessee, and Kansas.

As reported by NBC, the temperature in some areas reaches -20 to -30 degrees Celsius – 10 to 40 degrees below average. In areas affected by the severe weather, more than 860,000 households have been left without electricity. Many power outages were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The blizzard has also hit New York City.

Heavy snowfall is hitting the entire Ohio Valley and the Northeast, while freezing rain is falling in parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

New England areas will be affected by snow until Monday evening. Large amounts of snow are likely to fall in Boston and Albany, while Hartford, Connecticut and Portland, Maine may also be affected by heavy snowfall.

Flight cancellations
Air travel has also been affected due to the severe blizzard. Over 12,000 scheduled flights were canceled yesterday, while another 3,000 have been canceled so far today.
Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve this week, although snow and bitter cold may remain for several more days. As stated by Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service: “The snow and ice will melt very slowly and will not disappear quickly, which will hamper recovery efforts.”
Trump declares state of emergency
President Trump declared a state of emergency in at least twelve states by Saturday, with more expected to be added, according to CBS. This decision allows for immediate mobilization of FEMA, the federal disaster management agency, to address the severe weather. Through Truth Social platform, Trump appealed to American citizens: “Stay safe and stay warm!“.
