With intense missile attacks between Israel and Iran continuing, US President Donald Trump once again called on Iran today to “negotiate immediately before it’s too late.” On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, during his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump emphasized that “Iran is not winning this war,” while reminding that the US “has always supported Israel.” He claimed that “things are going very well for Israel right now,” on the fourth day of a conflict that continues to escalate.
WSJ: Tehran urgently seeks talks with US and Israel
Iran has sent urgent messages indicating it seeks to end hostilities and restart negotiations on its nuclear program, sending messages to Israel and the US through Arab mediator countries, the Wall Street Journal and Reuters reported today.
Officials told the WSJ that Tehran has informed Arab officials it would be open to returning to the negotiating table provided Washington does not participate in the hostilities. Iran also sent messages to Israel saying it would be in both sides’ interest to limit the violence.
Tehran reportedly told Arab officials it could accelerate its nuclear program and expand the scope of the war if there are no prospects for restarting talks with the US.
Two Iranian sources and three sources from other regional countries told Reuters today that Tehran asked Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman to pressure US President Donald Trump to use his influence on Israel to agree to an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Iran conflict that has been raging since Friday.
In exchange, Tehran would show flexibility in negotiations with Washington on Iran’s nuclear program.
