A joint message to American President Donald Trump that Greenland will not be annexed by the US was sent during a joint press conference on Tuesday by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Frederik Nielsen. Frederiksen emphasized that the issue goes beyond the borders of Greenland or even the Kingdom of Denmark. “This is not just about Greenland or the Kingdom. This is about the fact that borders must not be changed by force, that a people cannot be bought, and that small countries must not fear large ones,” she stated characteristically.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen:
Our message is clear: Greenland is not for sale. We have made that clear from the start, just as we have said to the Americans from the very beginning that if it’s about security, there is much more we can and should do together, and we… pic.twitter.com/4SfL7cAykv

According to her statements, Denmark and Greenland “are not only defending themselves, but the international order upon which previous generations built our democracy,” emphasizing the indivisible bond that unites the parts of the Danish Kingdom. She even addressed Greenland’s citizens directly through television cameras, saying: “Dear fellow citizens in Greenland, know that we stand united.”

For his part, Jens-Frederik Nielsen clearly stated the position of the autonomous territory, declaring that “Greenland does not want to become part of the United States.” As he noted, his government’s goal remains “peaceful dialogue, based on cooperation, with respect for our constitutional position, international law, our right to our land, and the right to self-determination.”
Greenland-Denmark: Foreign ministers to meet with Rubio and Vance on Wednesday
It should be noted that the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland will meet with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, Denmark’s foreign minister announced Tuesday, amid Trump’s pressure to take control of the Arctic island.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt requested the meeting following Trump’s renewed threats to seize Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty.
“US Vice President JD Vance also wanted to participate in the meeting and will host it at the White House,” Rasmussen told reporters in Copenhagen on Tuesday.
“The reason we requested the meeting that was granted to us was to move all this discussion… into a meeting room where we can look each other in the eye and discuss these issues,” he added.
Trump first raised the issue of US acquisition of Greenland in 2019, during his first term, although he faces resistance in Washington, even from his own party.
While Denmark has governed Greenland for centuries, Greenland has been gradually moving toward independence since 1979, a goal shared by all political parties elected to the island’s parliament.
