Comments that could be characterized as… incredible were made by Donald Trump, referring to Greenland’s defense, in the context of his new statements about its “acquisition” by the US. Specifically, the United States will take Greenland “one way or another” because “if we don’t take it, Russia or China will,” the American president repeated, before going on to dismiss the small Arctic territory’s defense by saying it consists of “two dog sleds.”
“Making a deal is the easy part, but one way or another we will have Greenland,” the US president declared on Sunday (11/1) from Air Force One. The American president clarified that Washington is not talking about a short-term “lease” of Greenland, but only about acquiring this Danish territory. “We need a title of ownership,” he said. “Greenland needs to make the deal, because Greenland doesn’t want to see Russia or China taking control,” Donald Trump argued, mocking the defense of the autonomous Danish territory.
Trump on Greenland’s defense: “Their defense is two dog sleds” – “If it affects NATO, so be it”
“Basically, their defense is two dog sleds. Do you know that? Do you know what their defense is? Two dog sleds,” he said. “Meanwhile, we see Russian destroyers and submarines, and Chinese destroyers and submarines everywhere,” Donald Trump added. “We’re not going to let that happen and, if it affects NATO, so be it. But, you know, they need us more than we need them, I tell you with certainty,” he commented.
Denmark, to which Greenland belongs, is a NATO member like the United States, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated last week that an American attack against any Alliance member would mean “the end of everything,” including NATO and the security system created at the end of World War II.
