U.S. President Donald Trump stated that China’s stance toward Taiwan depends on the decisions of Chinese President Xi Jinping, in an interview with the New York Times.

When asked whether the recent American action in Venezuela could create a “precedent” that Beijing might exploit, Trump noted that Xi considers Taiwan an integral part of China and that “it’s up to him what he will do.” At the same time, he emphasized that he has made it clear to the Chinese leader that such action would displease him greatly, expressing his assessment and hope that he will not proceed with such a move.
Donald Trump also assessed that Xi “might do it (i.e., take military action against Taiwan) after we have another president (in the White House), but I don’t think he would do it with me as president (of the U.S.).”
