Outrage has erupted in Minneapolis, USA over the cold-blooded murder of 37-year-old Rene Nicole Good by gunfire from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, January 7, in Minneapolis’s Powderhorn neighborhood, when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed 37-year-old Rene Nicole Good inside her vehicle.
Minneapolis shooting: Eyewitness account shocks – “My body was in shock”
Betsy, a local resident and eyewitness, described to ABC News that she went out for a walk, never imagining she would witness a fatal incident. “I realized my body was in shock. I felt truly terrified by what was happening,” she said, requesting her last name not be published. As she described, she heard whistling and honking and followed the noise. Reaching the intersection of East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, she saw “a cluster of vehicles in the middle of the road, including a burgundy SUV.”
Moments before the shooting
According to her testimony, neighbors were whistling in protest toward a group of federal agents, while one of them was shouting at the female driver through the SUV window. “It seemed to me she was trying to turn the car to head further south,” Betsy said. “At some point she began to accelerate, trying to move the vehicle away from the gathered cars,” she added. The moment the vehicle began to move, an agent continued shouting and, as the witness testified, fired shots.
Immediately after the gunshots, the SUV moved about 10 meters. “Then it became clear the driver had lost control,” Betsy said.
“There was a lot of blood”
“I saw her head fall back against the headrest and there was a lot of blood,” she added. The vehicle rolled slowly and crashed into a parked car a few meters ahead.
Minneapolis police reported that according to initial information, the woman was inside her vehicle and blocking traffic. “At some point, a federal agent approached her on foot and the vehicle began to move away. At least two shots were fired and the car ended up on the side of the road,” police reported, adding that there are no indications the woman was a target of any operation.
Different versions about agents’ positions
Betsy maintained that at the time of the shooting, the agents were beside and behind the SUV, near the driver’s window, not in front of the vehicle. Conversely, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated there was an agent in front of the car, claiming the woman attempted to run over the officers.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated that Good was “attempting to run over law enforcement personnel with her vehicle,” something disputed by local authorities.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz questioned the federal government’s claims, noting that video of the incident does not show an act of self-defense by the agent.
Moments after the shooting
According to the eyewitness, immediately after the shooting a neighbor ran to the SUV, opened the door and tried to check the driver’s condition. He asked bystanders to call 911, but Betsy reported she couldn’t get through. Shortly after, another neighbor approached and identified himself as a doctor, asking the agents to help control the bleeding.
Tense atmosphere in the neighborhood
Betsy emphasized that the experience had an intense psychological impact, in a community that, she said, was already under tension due to increased presence of immigration enforcement. “I still feel my nervous system in shock. There’s a lot of sadness, a lot of anger, but also intense pride in my community,” she said.
After the incident, a crowd gathered at the scene, less than a mile from where George Floyd was murdered in May 2020. Governor Tim Walz announced he issued a “warning order” for Minnesota National Guard readiness, while emphasizing the need for a “peaceful response” as the investigation into the shooting circumstances remains ongoing.
