The head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio, assured that the United States seeks to purchase Greenland, emphasizing that recent statements regarding the large island – an autonomous territory of Denmark – should not be interpreted as an indication of intent for military intervention, according to American media reports.
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources with knowledge of the briefing, Mr. Rubio made these statements during closed-door briefings to members of the American Congress. The New York Times, in a similar report, stated that American President Donald Trump asked his associates to present him with an updated plan for acquiring Greenland.
The Republican had already expressed this idea during his first term in office (2017-2021).
The American government has recently been escalating its rhetoric regarding Greenland. Yesterday, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt confirmed that among the options being studied is the “use of the military.”
