The need for Europe to become independent from Russian natural gas, the shift towards American gas with Greece as the main gateway, and the need to update the economic and technical elements of the electrical interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, were highlighted by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou following his meeting in Brussels with European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen.
Papastavrou: Greece as main gateway for American gas
“We met today with my Cypriot counterpart and Deputy Minister Mr. Tsafos, alongside European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Mr. Jørgensen,” he initially stated. “We briefed him on the important agreements decided last week in Athens with the American Ministers, agreements that lead to Europe’s independence from Russian natural gas and the shift towards American gas with Greece as the main gateway,” emphasized Mr. Papastavrou. He continued: “We also discussed the results of the 3+1 initiative we had with the Cypriot Minister, alongside the Energy Ministers of America and Israel. We emphasized the need to update the economic and technical elements of the electrical interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, as stated just hours ago by the Greek Prime Minister and the Cypriot President, in view of potential investment interest. Finally, we highlighted the need for Europe to move quickly and strengthen connectivity projects for further de-escalation of energy prices for households and businesses“.
Also present at the meeting were the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus, George Papanastasiou, and the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Nikos Tsafos.
