Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with former President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the residence of German Ambassador Andreas Kindl.
The meeting, which included Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of National Economy and Finance, Alexandra Papadopoulou, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurence Auer, French Ambassador to Greece, Symeon Tsomokos, President of the Delphi Economic Forum, Vasiliki Georgiadou, President of the National Centre for Social Research, and Hagen Fleischer, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Athens, discussed Greek-German relations and European and international developments.


Mitsotakis-Merkel meeting: European and international developments in focus
A meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Angela Merkel took place earlier Thursday morning, as the Prime Minister hosted the former German Chancellor for breakfast. Mr. Mitsotakis and Ms. Merkel exchanged views on European and international developments. The meeting, which according to sources was held in a particularly warm and friendly atmosphere, is part of Ms. Merkel’s visit to Greece, on the occasion of a series of contacts with figures from political and academic life.
The Greek Prime Minister and the former Chancellor had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues, focusing mainly on current European and international developments. Among the topics at the center of the dialogue were the progress of the European Union after the European elections, the economic cohesion of the Eurozone, geopolitical tensions in the broader Eastern Mediterranean region, as well as the challenges Europe faces in migration and energy security.
The Prime Minister praised Ms. Merkel’s role in shaping the European political scene for nearly two decades, emphasizing the importance of dialogue with personalities who have deep knowledge and experience in European issues. For her part, Angela Merkel expressed her appreciation for Greece’s steady progress and its pivotal role in maintaining European stability. The meeting concluded with the shared observation that Europe needs more unity, vision and adaptability to meet the challenges of our time.
