A closed session of the Security Council addressing the latest developments in Syria was convened on Monday, June 30, by Greece’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris. Our country’s initiative came after the terrorist attack that occurred the previous week at the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus.
The Security Council unequivocally condemned the terrorist attack that targeted Christians within their place of worship. Mr. Sekeris, on behalf of Greece, extended “deepest condolences” to the families affected by this cowardly attack, expressing sincere support and solidarity with the Syrian people, who experienced yet another bloody hostile act, as he characteristically stated in his remarks following the session.
Greek UN ambassador: We expect full accountability from Syrian authorities for all involved
Greece’s UN ambassador demanded punishment for those responsible for the terrorist attack: “We expect the authorities to ensure full accountability for all those involved and to immediately implement measures for the security of Christian communities, as well as all other religious and ethnic communities. This doesn’t concern only Christians. This time Christians were targeted, but this is about all religious and ethnic groups in this country,” emphasized Mr. Sekeris. He highlighted that a safe, stable and prosperous Syria for all Syrians constitutes a common goal of the international community. He further maintained that Greece is determined to help Syria in this endeavor. “We took note of the commitment by Syria’s transitional authorities to bring those responsible to justice. The international community expects full accountability and justice to be ensured,” he stressed.
Additionally, our country’s permanent UN representative called on the international community not to remain passive when such heinous crimes target peaceful communities, arguing that this terrorist attack targeted not just one specific community, but all Syrians and their efforts toward reconciliation and recovery. Furthermore, he said it is of utmost importance that all necessary measures be taken for the security of all ethnic and religious groups, so they can live with dignity and without fear, and that Greece is providing assistance to the victims of this abhorrent attack through humanitarian aid and contributing to the restoration of the Holy Church.
The UN session emphasized that full protection and integration of all religious and ethnic communities in Syria is a key factor for the country’s long-term stability. Christians in Syria and throughout the Middle East have historically been an integral part of the region and contribute to its prosperity and diversity. As Syria attempts to turn the page toward a better future, Christians can contribute significantly to this goal. To achieve this, they must be provided with appropriate protection and opportunities. According to the UN, Syria’s true wealth lies in the diversity of its culture and cultural heritage, and this wealth will only emerge if an inclusive, representative and tolerant Syria is secured.
