PASOK filed an unconstitutionality objection on Tuesday morning regarding the government amendment concerning the Unknown Soldier in the Parliamentary Plenary. PASOK’s parliamentary spokesperson Pavlos Christidis, announcing the main opposition’s decision, emphasized that “I am struck by the fact that today we are here to discuss a government amendment, but I don’t see any government officials present to present it.”

“I wonder, where is the competent minister? Where are the competent deputy ministers to present to us something that concerns their own ministry and about which there has been a very extensive discussion for 8 days now? A discussion that opened three days after the end of Mr. Panos Routsis’ hunger strike outside Parliament. A move that aimed, by Mr. Mitsotakis, to ensure that such a defeat for New Democracy would never happen again, like the one that came from the moral and logical demand of father Routsis,” he further emphasized. “I believe we all consider it our moral duty to render justice, and this is what Mr. Mitsotakis is trying to address with false dilemmas. It is obvious that all of us historically have absolute respect for the Unknown Soldier monument, and even during the most difficult moments of the last 15 years, no Greek proceeded to desecrate this monument,” Pavlos Christidis stressed.
“And it is important that during all these days that Mr. Routsis was here, all these events that concerned honoring Greece’s history with wreath laying were peaceful events. It is therefore obvious that what New Democracy is doing is using false dilemmas and creating issues that we will answer thoroughly today,” the PASOK parliamentary spokesperson argued. “However, there are also a series of issues arising from this amendment that come before us and require not only political analysis but also constitutional analysis. And for this exact reason, Mr. President, we inform you that PASOK’s Parliamentary Group will file an unconstitutionality objection regarding this amendment,” he concluded.
