Andreas Loverdos spoke about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and his reasons for joining New Democracy on an ERTnews program. He emphasized that he went “to a political space that values him” and left “a political space with a toxic climate that didn’t want him.” Moreover, Loverdos explained that his main goal is “to strengthen the only governing coalition that exists in Greece today”. He also underlined that his adherence to the party came at a time when voting intention is much lower than in the past. As he said, his integration into the coalition “didn’t happen when New Democracy was at 42%, but when New Democracy’s voting intention is at 24-25% and estimated at 28-30%. So I came during difficult times, not easy ones. I came to give, not to take”.
Loverdos on Unknown Soldier: “Respecting the monument is an obvious matter”
Regarding the amendment for the Unknown Soldier, Loverdos commented that “respecting the monument is an obvious matter.” “I believed from the first moment that this specific provision should be voted on.” “The heart of the problem, which is respecting this monument and respecting our dead, must be a given,” he added. “I have participated in events held in memory of the fallen. Is it possible to bow your head on one side during national anniversaries and the next day demonstrate and create problems?” he commented, adding that “this amendment represents an opportunity for convergences in Parliament.” He then referred to the victims of the Tempe railway tragedy, emphasizing that “in all tragedies, like in Mati, Marfin, and Tempe, there are human victims. We must respect them in the same way”.
“Tsipras’s book is a conduit for his effort”
Additionally, Loverdos referred to Alexis Tsipras, saying he “makes political interventions on major issues,” prompted by the former prime minister’s post about elections in occupied territories. “His book is a conduit for his effort. I believe that today’s opposition leaders who are judged by the electorate gave him the opportunity to return.” This gap Alexis Tsipras wanted and wants to fill, which is why he makes this effort. Whatever exists to the left of New Democracy will be affected,” he noted.
