Socrates Famellos is meeting with all MPs of the SYRIZA parliamentary group to assess their intentions following Alexis Tsipras’ resignation as party MP and amid scenarios suggesting he will proceed with his own party venture by 2026. The SYRIZA president is attempting to explore his interlocutors’ intentions while opening discussions about new sector leaders. So far, the SYRIZA president has met with Olga Gerovasili, Alexandros Meikópoulos, Kostas Barkas, Miltos Zabaras, Symeon Kedikoglou, Theófilos Xanthópoulos, and Charis Mamoulakis.
Polakis’ SMS calling for SYRIZA Political Secretariat meeting – What Socrates Famellos said about the Tsipras issue
Information suggests that MPs appear to be asking their president for the party to move based on the content of Socrates Famellos’ statement on the day of Alexis Tsipras’ resignation. Only Pavlos Polakis appears to desire a Political Secretariat meeting. Through an SMS he sent to several body members, he expressed his concerns, stating that the party has a problem. Socrates Famellos also addressed the Tsipras issue yesterday, Wednesday, in an interview saying: “We have no room for waiting. Our political view is that we take initiatives and in these initiatives no one is surplus. Especially when we have so many common struggles and such a strong legacy in SYRIZA-PS. Both from the government we served with Alexis Tsipras as prime minister, and from all of us with Alexis. He has a different reading on the issue of his participation in the Parliamentary Group. We believe not simply that we are not opponents, because we both declared this, but that the progressive plan of Progressive Greece requires many more forces. I would tell you even outside SYRIZA-PS and that’s why we make cooperation proposals without party limits. Clearly, initiatives must be undertaken. We believe that a strong SYRIZA-PS that takes initiatives is both a catalyst and guarantor of this prospect.”
Tsipras’ appointments
The truth is that several SYRIZA MPs appear to be in a particularly difficult position, as they believe a very difficult period will pass until some signal comes from Alexis Tsipras’ side. The former prime minister, however, based on what close interlocutors said, is not expected to make any appointments with MPs, especially from SYRIZA. At this stage, he is seeing people who have a significant role in society and who could express the new venture. Always according to the same sources, in several Greek cities there are cadres that will constitute the foundation for the new party. Meanwhile, information indicates that a similar process is taking place in New Left, as Alexis Charitsis is calling MPs from his party to ask them what they think about Tsipras’ party.
