Despite the highly anticipated meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, September 23, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, expectations for the development of Greek-Turkish relations remain low for the foreseeable future.
The reason? Meaningful dialogue is being significantly hampered by Ankara’s recent moves. In fact, it’s not unlikely that the research vessel “Piri Reis” will begin surveys in the Aegean Sea, departing from the Gulf of Smyrna. It should be noted that such a move would constitute a clear message from the Turkish side, capable of leading to the cancellation of the meeting.
