Maximos Charakopoulos was elected today, Friday (19/9) as the new secretary of the New Democracy parliamentary group, taking the position of the late Apostolos Vesyropoulos, who died suddenly at age 59 on the morning of Thursday, August 21, after suffering a heart attack while at a beach bar in Halkidiki.
Maximos Charakopoulos becomes new New Democracy parliamentary group secretary
At the beginning of the parliamentary group meeting, which took place Friday afternoon (19/9) under Prime Minister and party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Apostolos Vesyropoulos. Maximos Charakopoulos, who was the Prime Minister’s nominee, was warmly applauded by the party’s MPs.
It’s worth noting that Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at the beginning of his remarks, said among other things that, “when last April we appointed Apostolos as parliamentary group secretary, no one could have imagined his unexpected end.” He also added: “His example will show the way for those who follow. My proposal for this position is Maximos Charakopoulos. He is a calm voice, a colleague who has accumulated many miles both in Parliament and in government positions. Maximos, I wish you strength in your new duties.”
