Migration alert: Critical situation in Crete
The new migration crisis has triggered an alert in the government headquarters, with KYSEA proceeding to evaluate the migration situation and new initiatives that may need to be undertaken. It should be noted that on Monday morning (15/9) a meeting was held at the Maximos Mansion on the issue, while Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris assures that measures are being taken for the immediate decongestion of Crete.
According to reporting by Vasiliki Delimitrου for “Apogeumatini,” the Coast Guard and Greek Police are already transferring hundreds of people to closed facilities on mainland Greece, as the makeshift facility set up in Agia, Chania lacks specifications for hosting 1,000 or more arrivals. In any case, the situation that has developed in the last twenty-four hours in Crete and Gavdos is explosive, as new boats of migrants continue to arrive.
