The arrival of the first Belharra frigate, which is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s naval deterrence, was announced yesterday by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias during the inauguration ceremony of the Naval Academy’s Medical Center. As he stated, “in a few weeks, the ‘Kimon’ will arrive at Phaleron Bay, the first next-generation frigate, the first Belharra,” reminding that Greece has ordered a total of four FDI-type frigates.
During a period of increased operational needs and with a fleet showing signs of aging, the military and political leadership of the Defense Ministry is making moves to strengthen the Greek presence in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. In this context, Mr. Dendias emphasized that negotiations for the acquisition of two Italian Bergamini-type frigates are in full progress and are expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
